Bio-mimetic Tectonic Light Modulator Capturing the Volumetrics of Flight

A bird is flying in the sky. As its wings beat down, its full wingspan is visible. As its wings lift up, all that is visible is a slender body.

The project learns from nature’s invention of wings. It captures the visual transformation of a pair of wings batting. It uses the idea of open and closed positions to create a variable facade.  As the architectural element of ‘wings’ open and close in plan, the elevation reacts.  When a pair of wings is open the elevation of the project is opaque, when a pair of wings is closed the elevation is transparent. The same pieces are held at different positions along the movement path to create a variable volumetric surface.
