The high-rise design in the Transbay Area of San Francisco incorporated sustainable and mixed-use design strategies. The focus was to provide spaces for interaction both at the base and vertically throughout the structure.
To passively cool the building, we chose a perforated corten skin on the south facade that contrasts with the blue water of the Pacific.
Parks every four floors are circumscribed by twenty different dwelling units, but open to a southern exposure to draw natural day-lighting and ventilation to the core. These parks connect residents of the four floors to encourage a sense of neighborhood and community throughout the high-rise.
Plaza design played a significant role in how people, both familiar and foreign to the building and each other, would be welcomed by the structure. The northeast third of the plaza cantilevers over an off ramp, serving as a node for gathering residents and visitors.
