Fletcher Cove Community Center

FCCC is located on a bluff-top overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  Despite its prime location, deferred maintenance and the coastal environment had left the building in shambles and unusable.  Too few windows created dark interiors with no connection to the park or views outside. Hopes of expanding the building were limited by strict coastal regulations. Working within a restricted budget, SDA provided pro bono design services to transform the center into a light-filled community asset. Existing restrooms were relocated and a new glazed south wall was added to allow daylight in and views out.  To overcome its limited size (and capture views), wide doors were added that effectively “borrow” adjacent park space for the center’s use.  Leaving existing roof trusses exposed was a cost effective way to enliven the interiors, while outside new sweeping roof canopies shade openings and provide greater presence within the park.  The design also incorporates sustainable features such as PV panels, rainwater collection, passive heating and cooling, and recycled materials.
