The challenges of this site included its triangular shape and adjacency to a freeway off-ramp (with associated visibility setbacks). Incredibly, despite these challenges SDA was able to achieve a density of 100 DU / AC. The design relies on big gestures in response to the auto-centric location. Bold colors and curving wall planes (“fins”) are simple, low-cost architectural devices to achieve this. The one luxury was the zinc metal siding used on the street elevation. The blue / gray color varies in the sunlight and provides interest at the building entrance. A roof deck elevates tenants above the street traffic and provides city views.
