I’ve had an unconventional career path.
After graduating magna cum laude from UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School, I took a position at FTI Consulting in New York where I focused on helping distressed companies. The work was difficult but also interesting. I was quickly forced me to develop strong communication skills, sharpen my analytical abilities (across and regardless of industry), and work efficiently under pressure.
After several years, I was promoted and transferred to our London office based on strong evaluations and past international experience from studies in Hong Kong and Copenhagen. This transfer was part of a leadership development program within FTI for which only one candidate was selected each year.
In London, my engagements focused on small and medium sized enterprises which sought to improve their operating and financial performance. My new position carried increased responsibility and I developed skills such as managing clients, presenting to executive boards and overseeing smaller engagements.
After nearly 5 years of consulting, I decided to
pursue a second degree in architecture - design had been a passion of mine
since I was young, and it’s surprisingly not as different from consulting as
you may imagine: in both you are tasked with finding a solution from a mix of
fixed and flexible parameters, and it’s important to find and fight for the
best solution, not simply the lowest common denominator. In addition, both
require that you learn quickly, work in teams and handle responsibility.
My studies in architecture have shown me the importance of technology in design. I have been successful and lucky enough to work with prominent firms on remarkable designs, to host my own exhibitions, be published and even win several competitions. Based on this experience, I believe the successful designs are those that tell a visual story and convey a concept in unexpected and interesting ways. For me, this has been most effectively done recently through the use of Augmented Reality and animation tools.
On a technical note, I hold US and UK dual
citizenship, am a native English speaker, and have an ‘excel expert’
certification from Microsoft.
