Alex Robinson is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Master of Architecture program.  Throughout his time at the University of Minnesota, Alex received numerous competitive scholarships including the Thomas F. Ellerbe Scholarship from AIA Minnesota and the George G. Gorbatenko Fellowship.  In 2014, Alex received the Student Design & Scholarship Excellence award from the School of Architecture for his part in the Front Office ReDesign project.  Before architecture school, Alex worked construction with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and had his hands on over 60 houses across three years.  While at Habitat for Humanity, Alex learned valuable communication and group management skills simultaneously with construction documentation and coordination.

Design Fundamentals 2(Spring 2015, Spring 2014): The first undergraduate design studio for Freshman and Sophomores. I was responsible for guiding 15-20 students/semester through the design process from concept and site documentation to technical drawings and rendering.

Environmental Design (Fall 2014): A discussion and writing based class with 15-20 students which I was responsible for leading discussions on the sociocultural context of architecture in the world and grading student projects.

Perceptual Drawing (Fall 2013): The first drawing course for Freshman and Sophomores. I was responsible for aiding an instructor in teaching contour drawings, value drawings, constructed perspectives, and basic technical drawing styles to students.

Worked directly with Design Principals as part of this small start-up architecture firm. I was responsible for helping complete the final construction document set of a synagogue for bidding (redlines/detailing), conceptual floorplan designs in a mixed use residential design, researching conceptual design ideas for law firms, and designing a new brand for the firm through their website.

Redesigned and built a new interior for the front office of the School of Architecture with three other M. Arch students and professors Marc Swackhamer and John Comazzi. I was responsible for design development, detailing, CNC toolpathing, CNC milling, CNC plasma cutting, soldering, dovetailing, finishing, and final construction of the installation.

Taught undergraduate and graduate level architecture students how to properly operate power tools, hand tools, laser cutters, CNC routers, and 3D printers. Advised students on construction methods to safely achieve desired design goals.

Habitat for Humanity, Minneapolis, MN, US, Construction Volunteer Facilitator

Worked with a site supervisor on construction sites to manage and lead volunteers in construction tasks on Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity building projects. My first house was a LEED gold certified construction project in Hopkins, MN. I have worked with volunteer groups as large as 50 people with ages ranging from 18 to 80. Some of my favorite tasks were framing, floor/roof truss setting, stair construction, and millwork installation.

Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN, US, Wetland Research Technician

Counted, marked, identified, observed, and photographed wildlife- noted genus, species, sex, location, age, and malformations of up to six-hundred individual animals in a single day. Used radio telemetry and frog calls to track movements of 15 adult and 15 juvenile state-endangered amphibians with radio transmitters implanted in or externally attached to individuals. Trained three high school students in field research techniques, wildlife identification methods, data collection methods, using GPS coordinate systems, and radio telemetry equipment.
