Soft City - Gautrain precinct

The 2021 Urban Design studio class was given the Grand Central intersection as a study area. This is whereby the brief was to stitch the old midrand with the new Grand Central which we named Soft City. My contribution to the team was to link different modes of mobility thus making the pedestrian a priority. While Grand Central Boulevard intersects with Old Pretoria Road which is a K route, pedestrian crossing tends to be unpleasant especially to the elderly who wish to access the Gautrain therefore, my response to the status quo was to introduce the BRT station as well as to raise the intersections as means of forcing slow traffic. In order to ensure that the K route is not interfered with, an expressway underpass was introduced. One of the key principles that were emphasized are Transit Oriented Development as well as the 15 minute City concept which aligned themselves in that they promote mixed use development, walking, cycling as well as the use of public transport over a private car. The existing minibus taxi rank will remain in its current location on the old Midrand, as it is a major feeder to the Boulders Shopping mall, and instead, prepaid rental bicycle points will be introduced at various locations, which will then serve as feeders, and services such as Uber and Bolts will be used for those traveling in a wheelchair.
