A special ceremony honoring the 2023 Louis I. Kahn Award winners Herzog & de Meuron was held earlier this week as part of the Center for Architecture and Design Philadelphia’s annual fundraising banquet at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Anthropology and Archeology.
One-half of the Pritzker Prize-winning founding duo, Jacques Herzog, was on hand to receive the prestigious annual award bestowed in recognition of their contributions to the field since its initial formation in 1978. The firm's upcoming commission for the Alexander Calder Foundation in Philadelphia was among the projects he discussed in the Harrison Auditorium before a special VIP reception held in the museum's breathtaking Chinese Rotunda.
The event raises money for the Center’s Architecture and Design Education program, which connects practicing architects and designers with public school K-12 students in order to empower their curiosity and further ability to “use design to shape their homes, neighborhoods, and city.”
Past Kahn Award winners, including Bjarke Ingels, David Adjaye, and Norman Foster, count among a list of prominent names such as César Pelli, Robert A.M. Stern, and the husband-wife duo of Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi, whose work has helped cement Philadelphia’s place on a global list of must-see showcases of modern architecture.
Herzog & de Meuron follows the most recent honorees KieranTimberlake as the 36th overall Kahn Award winner. More information about the Center's award program can be found here.
