From individuals championing affordable housing and sustainability to those advocating for social justice issues within the realms of design and the built environment, the past twelve months featured an excellent group of professionals changing the industry.

Rice Design Alliance announces Tropical Space as the 2022 Spotlight Award recipient
"...the Vietnamese firm Tropical Space as the recipient of this year’s Spotlight Award recognizing exceptional architectural talent still in the early stages of their careers. The 11-year-old practice operates out of Ho Chi Minh City and focuses on the rare tropical application of brick as a building material in order to 'create values of architectural aesthetics and inspiring stories about local sustainability."
Women in architecture celebrated at the W Awards by the UK’s architectural press
"The Jane Drew Prize for Architecture 2022 has been awarded to British-Iranian architect, educator, and writer Farshid Moussavi. The annual award is given to an architectural designer whose work and activity has raised the profile of women in architecture [...] The Ada Louise Huxtable Prize for Contribution to Architecture 2022 has been awarded to the British-Palestinian artist Mona Hatoum, recognizing individuals from the wider architectural industry who have made a significant contribution to the built environment."
Craig Hodgetts and Hsinming Fung awarded the Tau Sigma Delta 2022 Gold Medal

Little Wing Lee announced as the first Female Design Council + NICOLEHOLLIS Grant winner
"Innovative interiors specialist Little Wing Lee has been named the first winner of the new Female Design Council + NICOLEHOLLIS Grant recognizing Women of Color-led interior design firms located within the United States."
Four women-led projects make up the 2022 Arnold W. Brunner Grant for Architectural Research winners
"The Center for Architecture and AIANY have announced the winning projects for this year’s 2022 Arnold W. Brunner Grant for Architectural Research competition. The four grants are awarded to licensed professionals in their mid-career working on various challenges to the design industry through investigations that will ultimately be applied to the art and science of architectural practice." This year's winners are Liz Ogbu and Christine Gaspar, Liz Teston, Jane Lea, and Julia Watson.
MODA is the 2022 RAIC Emerging Practice Award winner
"The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has named Calgary-based Modern Office of Design + Architecture (MODA) as its 2022 Emerging Practice Award recipient. MODA was first established by University of Calgary graduates Ben Klumper and Dustin Couzens in 2013 and has since gained distinction for its designs across a broad range of practice areas and scales..."
Seven architects and landscape architects awarded the 2022–23 Rome Prize
"Since it was established in 1894, the American Academy in Rome (AAR) is the oldest overseas center for research and independent studies within the arts and humanities. With a list of distinguished winners ranging across eleven disciplines, including architecture, landscape architecture, visual arts, literature, and more, thirty-eight Americans and four Italian artists and scholars were recognized this year." This year's Rome Prize winners are Michael Meredith and Hilary Sample of MOS Architects, Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers of Dream the Combine, Katherine Jenkins and Parker Sutton of Present Practice, and Alexa Vaughn.
Grafton Architects' Town House at Kingston University wins the 2022 EU Mies van der Rohe Award
"Following the recent announcements of 40 shortlisted and seven finalist projects, the jury of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture — Mies van der Rohe Award today revealed the final victors of the two 2022 trophies: Town House, the new Grafton Architects-designed academic and arts space at Kingston University, London, was selected as the grand winner of the Architecture Prize, while the Emerging Architecture Prize went to the La Borda cooperative housing project by Lacol in Barcelona."
"The W Awards, formerly known as the Women in Architecture Awards, announced this year's recipients of the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture and MJ Long Prize for Excellence in Practice. Both awards recognize the work of female and non-binary architects for their commitment to design excellence." This year's winners are Swati Janu (Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture) and Fiona Monkman (MJ Long Prize for Excellence in Practice).
"Winners have been announced in The Architectural League of New York's latest Prize for Young Architects + Designers portfolio competition. Each contestant is an early-career architect with no more than ten years out of a B.Arch or Master’s program."
"In March of 2022, the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology announced the nominated projects for this year's Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (MCHAP). Following that announcement, the awards program recently released the MCHAP's list of outstanding projects by recognizing 38 built works from 34 firms around the globe."
"The AIA Los Angeles Chapter (AIA|LA) has just announced its annual list of Presidential Awards honorees. A total of 12 winners were selected by the chapter’s board and President Mitra Memari, who also selected the Gold Medal winner." Gabrielle Bullock, Principal and Director of Global Diversity at Perkins&Will won the Gold Medal this year.
Marina Tabassum is named the 2022 Lisbon Triennale Millennium Lifetime Achievement Award winner

Dolores Hayden named as 2022 Vincent Scully Prize winner by the National Building Museum

"The Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum has announced the winners of the 2022 National Design Awards, now in its 23rd edition. NOMA's President-Elect Pascale Sablan takes home three inaugural Anthem Awards

SANAA founders Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa honored as 2022 Praemium Imperiale Award laureates

Architect and educator Meejin Yoon is named the 2022 Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts winner

Jeanne Gang honored with 2022 ULI Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development

Indian practice Wallmakers is named the 2022 Dorfman Award winner

"The Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation has announced a field of six influential women in the AEC industry to be honored as part of the 2022 BEVY Leadership Awards. After revealing the first two winners — Snøhetta Managing Partner Elaine Molinar and Arup’s Chair of the Americas Fiona Cousins — in August, the Foundation has now also confirmed architect and Cornell AAP Dean J. Visual artist and architect Amanda Williams receives 2022 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship grant
"The MacArthur Foundation has announced the recipients of this year's 2022 MacArthur Grant Fellows. Frequently referred to as the MacArthur 'Genius Grant,' the Foundation awards 'unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.' This year, notable Chicago-based visual artist and architect Amanda Williams is among the 2022 MacArthur grant winners."
Anne Fougeron is named the 2022 Maybeck Award winner by the AIA California
"The AIA California has named San Francisco-based architect Anne Fougeron the recipient of the Maybeck Award in recognition of the work her 37-year-old practice has pursued with 'technical finesse, humanism, and equity.'"
Five architects, designers, and researchers announced as 2022 ACADIA Awards of Excellence winners
"Since 1998, the organization has celebrated individuals and their contributions to design computation through awards, grants, and scholarships through ACADIA Awards of Excellence." This year's award winners are Eric Höweler and J. Meejin Yoon of Höweler + Yoon, Jason Kelly Johnson, Rajaa Issa, and Felicia Ann Davis.
Social housing champion Peter Barber awarded 2022 Soane Medal
"British architect Peter Barber has been awarded the 2022 Soane Medal. Operating through his practice Peter Barber Architects, Barber is widely celebrated for this approach to designing and delivering high-quality, affordable residential architecture."
"Canadian architect Alain Fournier has been announced as the winner of the 2022 Ernest-Cormier Prize by the Government of Quebec. The EVOQ Architecture founder was honored for his advocacy work and educational contributions as well as his commitment to environmental justice and improving the quality of life for First Nations and Inuit communities across Canada."
Two emerging architects awarded AIANY's 2022 Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant
"Two emerging architects were recently named as winners of the 2022 Stewardson Keefe LeBrun Travel Grant by the Center for Architecture at the AIA New York (AIANY) [...] Tadd Heidgerken and Zui Lig Ng were awarded a combined total of $25,000 for projects that look into the built environment in five different countries as possible guides for solutions to various ascendant challenges in the industry."
Carol Ross Barney awarded 2023 AIA Gold Medal for being ‘unrivaled architect for the people’

Mithun is named the AIA Architecture Firm Award winner for 2023
"Continuing its annual tradition of honoring America’s top practitioners, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) has named Mithun the AIA Architecture Firm Award winner for the year 2023. Mithun was joined by Gold Medal winner Carol Ross Barney in the awards announcement, which mentioned their ability to bring about positive change through a 'holistic, interdisciplinary pursuit of architecture.'"
AIA names Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, Topaz Medallion, and Edward C. Kemper Award winners

Architect Achim Menges wins a 2023 Leibniz Prize for his computational design research
