Following the announcement of the winning entries in the 2021 Architecture Drawing Prize in November, in which student submissions won first place across all three categories, the competition’s overall winner has finally been unveiled. For “Fluid Strata — Flood-responsive landscape performance,” Dafni Filippa, a Master’s Landscape Architecture student at The Bartlett School of Architecture, took home the top prize.
Fluid Strata was a joint winner in the Hybrid category, recognized for its originality and flair in combining different drawing techniques. The project responds to the climate emergency in central London by proposing the utilization of the “Deep Ground” as a tool for flood defense.
The competition’s curator Sir John Soane’s Museum had this to say: “Filippa’s project takes the climate emergency as its starting point, imagining a future London in which the Thames Barrier has been overwhelmed and flash floods are a regular occurrence. She proposes a solution which involves injecting hydro-membranes deep underground, protecting the infrastructure from flood waters. The image began with a photograph of a physical model which was then digitally manipulated.”
“As a jury, we were all impressed by Fluid Strada and the way it blurs the lines between physical objects and drawing with great skill and imagination, making it a truly exceptional example of a hybrid rendering," added founder of Make Architects and judge Ken Shuttleworth.
Sir John Soane’s Museum is hosting an exhibition of The Architecture Drawing Prize until February 19th, featuring Filippa’s Fluid Strata, along with other finalists and category winners.
