A star-studded showcase of the ways in which design is preparing for the unique challenges of our unfurling century is coming to the Peach State this week thanks to the Museum of Design Atlanta’s latest exhibition.
Titled Survival Architecture & The Art of Resilience, the show takes from multiple architects and designers engaged in the art of the future in a survey of technological innovations that are poised to shape the world to come.
Featuring works from Mary Mattingly and others, the exhibition was organized around questions like “What does it take to survive and thrive amid a changing climate?” and “How might we navigate the needs of the world’s most vulnerable citizens?” posed by curator Randy Jayne Rosenberg of Art Works for Change.
“The exhibition reminds us that we can only overcome the 21st century’s biggest challenges if we let our imaginations soar,” MODA Director Laura Flusche said in a statement. “The exhibition presents radically innovative ideas meant to help us navigate climate change and natural disasters. While not all of these ideas can or will be brought into being, they remind us that we must break rules, work across disciplines, and be brave in our quest to solve the very biggest problems.”
The exhibition is arranged around four central themes including Circular, Portable, Visionary, and Resilient. Some pieces are speculative, while others like Achim Menges’ HygroSkin Meteorosensitive Pavilion have been realized with commonalities tackling broad-scale issues like refugee housing and climate change.
The roster of featured architects, designers, artists, and institutions also includes Toyo Ito, Alejandro Aravena, Daan Roosegaarde, Mitchell Joachim and Terreform ONE, the IKEA Foundation, and the UN Refugee Agency among many others.
Survival Architecture & The Art of Resilience opens to the public on August 27th and will remain on view through the fall. Tickets for the exhibition can be reserved here.
