New London Architecture has announced the winners of its 2018 New London Awards, their annual program celebrating the best architecture and development recently completed or in design across the capital. From over 150 shortlisted projects, 30 architectural gems have been honored across 15 categories, ranging from Housing to Offices, Education to Transport & Infrastructure, and Public Spaces to Masterplans & Area Strategies.
The London Bridge Station by Grimshaw for Network Rail, one of the most complex and ambitious rail station redevelopments in the UK, was named the Overall Winner. The long-running project was praised for its impressive scale and complexity and for having sustainability as a key driving factor in both its design and construction. It was also the winner of the program's Sustainability Prize.
Kings Crescent Estate, the large-scale estate regeneration project led by Karakusevic Carson Architects, was selected by London Mayor Sadiq Khan as winner of the Mayor's Prize. A collaboration with the London Borough of Hackney, the project saw the refurbishment of over 200 existing homes, as well as the creation of 500 new homes and new public spaces where previous unpopular high-rise buildings had been demolished in the late 1990s.
The People's Choice award, which gave members of the public the chance to vote for their favorite London buildings over the London Festival of Architecture in June, went to Walthamstow Wetlands by Witherford Watson Mann Architects and Kinnear Landscape Architects.
