Construction has begun for the upcoming Hamburg Innovation Port, which MVRDV was commissioned to design after winning the competition in 2016. The multi-phase mixed-use masterplan will become part of the evolving Channel Hamburg tech hub located on the banks of the old Harburger Schloss. The first stage of construction is expected to complete in Spring 2019.
“Part of the plan is the idea of a diverse public space in which each section has its own strong character,” describes MVRDV co-founder Jacob van Rijs. “There is a park, a boulevard, a square, shared spaces and a waterside promenade that invites office workers to have outside meetings and al fresco luncheons creating a vibrant waterside neighborhood.”
Flexibly designed to accommodate future needs, the masterplan will comprise of: 6,300m2 of hotel space, 5,400m2 of conference halls, 26,000m2 of offices, 9,600m2 laboratories, 7,100m2 research facilities, and 7,800m2 of integrated parking space. According to MVRDV, “the project offers a 1,35m grid that provides enough flexibility to change the program and allows enterprises of all sizes to occupy the various buildings”.
Connected by walkways and bridges, the four buildings will have light facade cladding to give a coherent appearance. Some rooftops will be landscaped and partially equipped with terraces and solar panels. The plan will also feature a “floating” outdoor pool, the architects say.
