The 2018 RIBA Awards cycle continues! Today, RIBA announced the 49 winners for the 2018 National Awards, which distinguish recent projects that set the standard for outstanding architecture across the UK.
Advancing from the RIBA London Awards, the National Award winners — which range from major cultural buildings and sports centers to housing and memorials — are still in the running for the 2018 Stirling Prize for UK's Best New Building. The Stirling Prize shortlist will be announced on July 19, and one project will be crowned the winner on October 10.
Some of the key trends RIBA observed in the National Award winners include: dual- or multi-functional buildings to benefit local communities; use of building materials sensitive to local context; high-quality housing projects that demonstrate the benefits of local authority-led regeneration; and reuse and regeneration, especially in commercial projects. “I am particularly pleased to see some excellent examples of large-scale housing schemes amongst this year’s winners,” RIBA President Ben Derbyshire commented. “Projects such as these are beacons showing how it is possible for enlightened local authorities and developers to create the well-designed, desirable and sustainable homes that communities so desperately need.”
