If you've spent some time on Bustler and Archinect in the past five years, you couldn't escape Fairy Tales, the architectural storytelling competitions held annually by the good people of Blank Space.
Launched in 2014, Fairy Tales has attracted thousands of stories, fables, and tales from architects, artists, designers, students, even multinational firms and Pritzker Prize laureates, and we've had the pleasure of publishing some of the most outstanding entries, including the winning fairy tales "Chapter Thirteen" by Kevin (Pang-Hsin) Wang and Nicholas O'Leary in 2014, "Empty" by Zigeng Wang in 2015, "Welcome to the 5th Facade" by Olson Kundig in 2016, and "Last Day" by Mykhailo Ponomarenko in 2017.
While the latest, fifth edition closed for entries in December and jury members Bjarke Ingels, Daniel Libeskind, Elizabeth Diller, Thom Mayne, Roman Mars, and others are currently selecting the top submissions (to be announced here on March 29!), we wondered how nice it would be to hold the best stories in your hands, compiled and nicely designed in one big, beautiful hard cover Fairy Tales book. – Oh wait! – That's actually really happening...with your help: Blank Space is currently crowdfunding Storytelling Architecture at Volume and hopes for your support to make this Fairy Tale endeavor a reality.
Take a look at some of the pretty page spreads designed by Rachel Dalton:
The publication will be organized into the most pressing themes of our times and planet: Urbanism, Globalization, Equality, Sustainability, and Technology.
Blank Space cofounders Matthew Hoffman and Francesca Giuliani also edited the book. "Storytelling Architecture is a mind-bending collection of the most innovative and thought-provoking architectural narratives today - all in a large format, covetable book. We were approached by the founders of Volume to publish this retrospective edition last year, and were thrilled by the concept of creating a community around the book, before it was published, echoing the manner in which the stories were born from an open call to the Fairy Tales competition.”
