Yesterday the AIA announced the recipients of three important awards: the Topaz Medallion, the Whitney M. Young Jr. Award, and the Kemper Award. The recipients were selected by the Board of Directors and the Strategic Council of the AIA.
2018 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion: Jorge Silvetti
The Topaz Medallion is one of the highest honors for an architecture educator and is awarded to those who have been intensely involved in architecture education for more than a decade and whose teaching has influenced a broad range of students. Jorge Silvetti has taught at Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) since 1975 as a gifted professor and mentor. He has also served as chair of the architecture program from 1995-2002.
2018 Whitney M. Young Jr. Award: Tamara Eagle Bull
The Whitney M. Young Jr. Award honors architects who champion a range of social issues. Tamara Eagle Bull is an advocate for culturally relevant and responsible design, and a recognized leader in the realm of contemporary Native American architecture. As the first Native American woman in the U.S. to become a licensed architect, she uses her position and knowledge to improve the schools and communities in which she works.
2018 Kemper Award: Lenore M. Lucey
The Kemper Award, named in honor of the AIA’s first executive director, recognizes significant contributions to the profession and Institute through service to the AIA and who advocate for architects and demonstrate relevance and influence on society. Lenore M. Lucey has built a legacy advancing the profession in her roles of design professional, former executive director of AIA New York, a leader of the AIA College of Fellows Executive Committee, and a National Council of Architectural Registration Boards executive.
