Standing at 72 stories tall, 4 World Trade Center in New York City was among the 13 winning projects in the AISC's 2017 IDEAS2 Structural Steel awards competition. Designed by architects Maki & Associates and Adamson Associates along with the notable Leslie E. Robertson Associates as structural engineer, 4 WTC was the first building to open on the original World Trade Center site — more than a decade after the September 11 attacks.
“The 2.3 million-sq.ft. office skyscraper serves as a beacon for businesses returning to downtown Manhattan; 250,000 daily commuters pass through the lower levels on their way to one of 13 subway or commuter rail lines that surround the tower. More importantly, the structure pays respect to the tragic history of the grounds commemorated by the National September 11 Memorial.”
"This project has a complex structural system that is elegantly concealed," commented Chris-Annemarie Spencer, a project architect at Wheeler Kearns Architects and the architect juror in the competition.
Members of the project team will be presented with their IDEAS2 award during a ceremony at the tower on Wednesday, August 30, at 4 p.m.
Other winning projects from the 2017 IDEAS2 Awards include NBBJ's Samsung American HQ, the Eric Owen Moss-designed Pterodactyl Office, and the communal Lamar Station Classroom for Urban Farming.
