Educational nonprofit archive North Carolina Modernist Houses celebrates local modernist residential design in the George Matsumoto Prize. Established in 2012, the prize honors the late architect George Matsumoto, who designed some of the most well-known modernist houses in North Carolina.
Entrants submitted their residential designs for a chance to win one of the three cash prizes, which total up to $6,000. An esteemed jury of well-known architects, critics and designers as well as online public voting decided on the winning projects.
For 2017, three prize winners and three people's choice projects were announced. Check them out below.
1st prize ($3,000): Scott Huebner of Asheville for the West Chapel House
2nd prize ($2,000): Jason Hart of Chapel Hill for the Balakrishnan House
3rd prize ($1,000): Duncan McPherson of Asheville for the Hammock House
People's Choice Winners:
Michael Ross Kersting of Wilmington for the Run Ashore House
Craig Kerins of Raleigh for the Hungry Neck House
Scott Odgen of Wilmington for the SCANDINAVIAN House
