This week's picks for London architecture and design events

Skill Up Summer School with Grimshaw Architects and Cutty Sark | 31 July - 4 August | Register now

Surrounding the only surviving tea clipper, is Grimshaw's Cutty Sark structure which has been both celebrated and critiqued throughout the years. This building serves as inspiration and setting (as well as RIBA's HQ) for a week of educational workshops for 15-18 year olds. Touching on elements of the design process, this week-long summer school will give young people an experience of working through a brief and learning the basic principles and theories of architectural design.

Gallery Talk: Jon Abbott (Barnbrook) and Brian Studak (Plaid) | 31 July

This after-hours tour of  the Design Museum's California: Designing Freedom exhibition  will give insight into the design process and spatial narrative not of the works, but of the exhibition itself. 

Frieze Sculpture 2017 | Until October

Frieze Sculpture returns to London again this year with its free outdoor display of 20th Century artists's works throughout Regent's Park. Selected by Clare Lilley, the works range from 'the playful to the political', with well-known names amongst less established artists. 

Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power | Until October

This reflective exhibition looks at the art from the height of the Civil Rights movement  in America, and how artists responded to these times. These works are widely vibrant, powerful, and heavy with African American pride and solidarity. 

Into the Unknown: A Journey through Science Fiction | Until September

Science Fiction is a genre that can so often be paralleled in architectural design.  Vintage artwork from the Soviet's ambitions to journey into the stars sits alongside the prose of key writers; dystopia and utopia rubbing up against one another. From the roots of the genre, right through to modern cinema, such as Ex Machina, this exhibition seeks to cover the entirety of our obsession through art, design, film and literature.
