REX and Principal in Charge Joshua Prince-Ramus have been named the winner of the BibLLLiotheek competition to build a “Library of the Future” for the city of Kortrijk, Belgium. Bustler
is it only me, or is there a bit of Seattles public library in it?! just re-packaged and stuff in a neat acrylic box! regardless, its interior seems provokingly open, as the new library medium...
It's "provokingly open" because it has no structure. One of the beautiful moves in the Seattle project is a structural skin that takes on most of the lateral loading. This project is missing that.
Sorry guys but I don't see any resemblance to Seattle, it rather reminds me of the spatial organization of the Jussieu Libraries.
If one looks at the renderings submitted one can see gigantic objects that may work as columns. I'd agree with you that maybe they won't be enough and probably more slender supporting elements will appear.
The architect may have omitted them to enhance the spatial quality of the project.
There is a very good reading about the project here: http://archidose.blogspot.com/2009/08/half-dose-66-kortrijk-central-library.html
Regards to you all

I'm sure that columns don't win competitions.
