The Architecture Faculty of the Technical University of Delft is fully destroyed by fire.
The fire started about 9.30 this morning on the 6th floor due to a short circuit in a coffee machine.
The Faculty is now considered as destroyed.
A loss for the staff and the students including myself.

Wow....
That sucks!
i'm so sorry...hopefully everyone got out okay and everyone recovers from the loss of work and materials/computers/etc.
I spent a summer there....that's really sad.
Isn't lletdownll going there next year?
jasper, this is terrible. please keep us updated.
bummer. hopefully the architecture schools throughout the world will volunteer to give each of these students a place to learn.
i have a friend also there, and she just told me first thing in the morning...bummer, but second thinking, how many times i wanted that during highschool and never happened.... anyways, new building!

rumor is they will end up taking classes at the Berlage Inst, J.Jourden
i think thats neat, both schools would have the experience to talk to each other and see what others do... its interesting to me that 2 diff schools have to share the same physical space
yeah, new building and no school today!
"architecture must burn" i guess....
how about new comers who are accepted from tu delft? everything would be done in a container blocks in the first year??
A big loss...
As a student there some years ago, I shared a love-hate relationship towards the building with most of my friends. However, it's undeniable that it played a big role in our life.
I was in the first generation of "school bloggers" (with MADianito above) sending news from the school. I hope Archinect keeps a backup of these things. Most of the pictures I took were from our studio on the floor where the fire started (incluing the coffe machine that supposedly ignited everything).
Anyway, new building, new life!
wow, well i havent yet heard back about my application but i had hoped to go there.
a good friend of mine went there and is now working in rotterdam so he let me know about this this morning. anyone think theres a chance they will restrict admissions because of this?
i just spoke to my friend who teaches there and is doing his PhD. his office was completely destroyed, all his books, notes, previous work gone! luckily for him his laptop with his current PhD documents was at home at the time.
hard to imagine how it feels, but he was quite positive. guess you have to be.
Well the whole Faculty is considered destroyd @ the moment, and now a logistic operation starts to re- house the 3000 students and staff. I'm in my second year there, but I don't know what is going to happen next.
Oh and there are no casualties, every one was evacuated in short time.
The great loss here is the loss of knowledge and the beautiful collection of orginal modernist chairs from the twenties and thirties ( breuer, rietveld etc. ) and not to forget the archive of the library of around 40000 documents.
It's a sad, sad thing.
not just burnt for that matter... collapsed.
Oh no.
You mean the library was in the faculty building as well?
Horrible, the burning of books!
it's funny how we are already the talk of the nation-wide town. 'how can architects study in a building that goes down after a friggin' coffee machine short circuit?' yet that's how it happened.
all we as the architecture community in Delft can think of right now is how to overcome this disaster and live on as a community and turn this into positive energy...
do we need to run an archinect book drive for TU delft?
I will keep a blog up about the coming years of rebuilding the faculty, share my thoughts and stories about how to restore such community.
A book drive sounds like a great idea!
