Donald Judd bought 101 Spring Street, an 1870 cast-iron building, in 1968 for $68,000.
He stripped the dilapidated building down to its plaster walls and wood floors, illegally removing distractions like fire sprinklers.
Then Judd (1928-1994) spent decades turning the spaces into a showcase for his art and a place to rest his head on a bed made of wood planks. It’s carefully related to the colored tubes by Dan Flavin that march across the room, echoing the rhythm of a gorgeous row of windows.

I like and know Judd's art objects. They are reduced to minimal and are what they are. Why then all the fussy-ness of presentation and placement. Judd's art-objects should 'work' as is. Unless of course it is all about the context which to me contradicts Judd's premise of the primacy of the object itself. Or am I misreading this?
some objects only becomes art when they are in the right context.
you should get to like and get to know Judd's texts. One thing next to a is not the same as One thing next to b, which is exactly not to say its about context.
I think he goes into it in this essay, but I haven't taken the time to read what was posted - I just remember the red and black from the title. I read it in a monograph ages ago . . .
Thanks Spike. I had a copy of Judd's art criticism for a while. The writing was OK.
The art pieces of Judd that I have seen don't refer to any context or placement. His objects are complete. His famous working method, (Judd designed the objects that were later made in a shop, has no artist personality, no artistic workmanship, ie the artist's hand'.
If just an object why the preciousness of placement.
see the specific essay linked.
one word summary: space.
Donald Judd is awesome. 101 Spring is great. However, it is sad in a way that a once creative hub for artists is now mummified--like so many NY spaces. This says more about New York then anything--it has become a museum to itself and its once creative past. I guess you have to go to the border of gentrification to find the real creative work.
