"I am a naturally peaceful person, but I wouldn't be that upset if 'Vladimir' accidentally met with a baseball bat," - an art lover @twitter — The Guardian
The Guardian reported "A man has defaced a multimillion-pound Mark Rothko mural hanging in the Tate Modern gallery in front of onlookers. A police investigation is now under way into the vandalism of the US artist's work.
The graffiti on the painting appears to read "a potential piece of yellowism." According to an online manifesto, Yellowism is an artistic movement run by two people named Vladimir Umanets and Marcin Lodyga."

how criminal
Hmm...a young lady was caught in an act of vandalism at the Clyfford Still museum and then tried to urinate on the canvas. What do these folks have against abstract expressionist painters?
Blame Tim Burton. In his film Batman the Joker and his crew defaced and vandalized a museum. It was all over the internet back then among arts and museum professionals. The worry was copy-cat acts.
These acts of defacement do not just single out abstract expressionism. Other types of art too.
But i have a theory. Maybe a hypothesis. Larger abstract paintings take on a Rorschach quality, and the psychological projection aspect is part of the pleasure of the works. Crazy people see other things in the canvas; something a soon to be schizophrenic can read into.
And btw the ' yellow manifesto' reads like a humorless imitation of Ad Reinhart thesis 'art is art'.
Tony Shafrazi is one of the biggest art dealers in New York. Back in 1974 he spray painted Picasso's Guarnica at MoMA with the words "KILL LIES ALL." Here is the story.
Yellowist Vladimir Umanets didn’t destroy Mark Rothko’s painting in Tate Modern, it was not an act of vandalism. He signed the Rothko’s painting and thus show that this painting is a potential piece of Yellowism. This action informs the contemporary world, that Rothko’s painting can stop to be a work of art and can become a piece of Yellowism - If Rothko’s painting was placed in a yellowistic chamber then it would not be a work of art anymore and would express yellow color only; it would be a definition of yellow given in a form of Rothko’s painting.
Yellowism is not an art movement. Yellowism is the new context in contemporary culture. Yellowist, based on the definition and Manifesto of Yellowism, can sign any object or being or any work of art to show that it can be transported to the new context and become an example of Yellowism. Don’t call Umanets an artist. He is not an artist, he is a Yellowist. He resigned from art. Yellowism is not a form of art. It is a new context in which the value of Rothko’s painting increase.
The Radical Change of Perception. Now.
by Marcin Lodyga
shit.
there goes my idea for duckism.
this is why they cant have good art in russia. Why couldnt he sign one of the dear ladies of pussy riot instead and change her status and perception?
On the one hand Im glad that someone cares enough to scribble on a rothko. On the other hand, it doesnt take a lot of effort to write a manifesto and do something stupid (witness domestic terrorism in america). Ai weiwei would have to break a lot more pots, more than were lost by building the three gorges dam, for us to burn our tshirts.
Lets just burn this particular Rothko and let it be in perpetuity a memorial of the shame of having to protect art from artists, given all the attacks it faces from everywhere else.
Vandalism in the name of a self-proclaimed "new context in contemporary culture" is still vandalism -- dear. Please apologize and then . . . get a life. And don't take yourself so seriously -- it's silly and demeaning.
I'd like to perpetrate a Radical Change of Perception on Vladimir's face -- but I don't believe in vandalizing someone else's property.
yes, the only issue of any interest is whose property it is.
and your respect for private property is what keeps your aggression under control.
cool, bro.
Yellowism really?
