In 1948 Le Corbusier was retained by the municipality of Izmir (my home town) to develop a visionary master plan for the city. He disregarded the historic core of Izmir which is laced with artifacts and buildings as old as 3500 years old and eventually was forced to resign from the job and most of his fees were cancelled. There are some faint lines from his plan remains today like the International Fair grounds, a purple colored oval area on the plans. His ideas would be very inadequate and lose their initial vision for a city of 4 million residents today on a relatively small footprint surrounding its bay.

It is also interesting to note here that the architect was also working on Unité d'Habitation at the time and some of his prototypical sketches for the housing stock in Izmir reflect some of the ideas he employed in Unité d'Habitation.
not sure if i am just reading map and plans wrong but it also seems that the city grew in the direction opposite of what he was drawing...
nam, city grew in all directions. it is interesting observation though, because he made his drawings looking towards the center of the city instead of using due north as a reference. kind of upside down but more important view.
