Chicago architecture firm Goettsch Partners has designed the signature building that will be the new home of Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music and provide additional space for the School of Communication on Northwestern’s Evanston campus. The university is planning to break ground and begin construction in May of this year. The project is slated to be completed and ready for move-in in fall 2015. — bustler.net

I am curious how others feel about this building? Personally, I feel it is reasonable at best and banal at worst, but probably it's just reasonably banal. The building seems emblematic to me of the sort of work pervasive in North America at the moment... big, bland, polite and ultimately not contributing anything to the discourse of architecture at large. It's a big world, and there's room in it for this to be sure, but the architecture press isn't _so_ big... is there room there for it? I find it surprising that Archinect has published it. Am I alone? Probably I am being too cranky, but why is a building like this being received in the press with zero criticality? Am I right to expect better?
Our office was a part of the competition from which this building was selected. Hopefully my Goettsch friends dont take it personally, but i thought our submission was better. Likely though, too aggressive for northwestern's taste.
