“It has been extraordinarily controversial and I made no bones of the fact that it’s not a project I would have supported if I had been on council at the time,” said the mayor.

is it just me or is it that a lot of calatrava's projects are shrouded in controversy? budget problems seem to be a recurring theme. anyone more familiar with this that can weigh in?
Who knew -- that engineers would build even more extravagantly than do architects ?!
The Tour Eiffel was controversial too, as I recall. Would anyone call that an extravagance,
now ?
