"The floors will be plain neutral colours - because coloured patterns can appear as holes in the ground to the visually impaired - but there will be different textures to let them know when they're stepping over a threshold."
I am very into this type of project, so if anyone has suggestions for other projects to check out, I am all ears.
thanks.
There's a project - a school for the blind - by G. Bruce Stratton Architects in this month's Arch. Record. It's got some nice touches.
thx dose. i remember this project, but the link are dead. thx for the update. I will check it out.
And of course there's Stanley Tigerman's Library for the Blind in Chicago, but you probably know all about that one. It's actually one of my favorites of his, mainly because of the sinuous window and corresponding counter inside (the latter esp. good as an interaction element) and not the bright paint colors.
It's a bank now, bright blue instead of red. Don't know if they kept the counter, though.
Totally just graphic -- not at all what you're asking for here, but I thought this was kind of lovely, these climbing wall pegs by NL Architects... applied in Braille, they spell a text: the Blind Facade.
