Brooks + Scarpa has shared photos of its recently completed design for the Youth Sports Complex in Pompano Beach, Florida.
The concept of the 10-acre project centers around The Field House, an enclosed 4,100-square-foot pavilion structure at the center of the park. Approached from the north elevation at Northeast 10th Street, visitors will be able to clearly view the signage that's encased in its yellow-painted metal lattice screens.
Simple, cost-efficient board-formed concrete walls create the structure’s “playful and sculptural” outer facade. A wraparound porch is then formed inside the shell, capped by a sloping roofline that funnels water from its scupper into the aquifer of the rain garden below.
Inside the porch of the pavilion, high-speed ceiling fans of varying heights that keep the space 20 degrees cooler are painted blue in contrast to the raw concrete and bright yellow primary colors of the other surface finishes.
Visitors can use the space either as a gathering area or as a respite from the inclement weather. A concessions area completes the pavilion, with its omnidirectional orientation providing unobstructed views of the four multipurpose sports fields capable of hosting up to 1,000 athletes beyond.
Local firm KEITH provided the project’s landscape design. Costs for the project came in at around $11.08 million (with $1.1 million being used for the new Field House structure).
Brooks + Scarpa had also completed a similar project in the adjacent Centennial Park for the city of Pompano Beach previously and says both will now combine to create a vibrant “Living Room” for the community of approximately 111,000.
Also in Florida, the firm is completing work on their design for the new Holocaust Memorial at the state capitol complex in Tallahassee.
