The Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University, recently ranked one of the top 100 national universities in the United States, offers graduate degrees in architecture, landscape architecture, horticulture, historic preservation, facilities management, community development, and city and regional planning.
With its diverse portfolio of disciplines in the built and natural environment, Tyler provides a multifaceted Architecture and Environmental Design (AED) curriculum that emphasizes engaged learning on-site and in design studios, as well as collaborative workshops. In our planning and community development programs, students explore current issues using the urban complexities of Philadelphia as a place for field study and research.
Tyler’s programs are distinguished by a culture of inquiry and making, with attention to change for a positive future. Design-build projects are a thread in the curriculum across art and design disciplines that link hands-on investigations with future-focused innovation.
Our graduate students work alongside each other to explore real-world challenges and opportunities facing society today and into the future, with academic tracks designed for those seeking professional certification as well as professions seeking to expand their skill sets. They find commonalities in their academic pursuits and professional programs that prepare them to impact their chosen field.
Tyler offers five professional or post-professional degrees at the graduate level:
All AED graduate students have access to the abundant resources of a large, tier-one public research university and AED faculty who model a culture of inquiry through their own research and professional practice, combining the latest praxis with theory and scholarship to innovate in the classroom.
The richness of architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and allied professional fields across the Philadelphia region offers limitless possibilities for experiential learning. With a large network of alumni in leading firms around the Philadelphia region, graduate students have myriad opportunities for mentorship and internships with some of the most accomplished professionals practicing today.
Graduate students have access to a four-story, 50,000-square-foot building with expansive design studios, maker spaces, fabrication labs, and printing facilities that offer 3D printers, laser cutters, AR/VR design stations, woodshop workstations, plotters, digital routers, and more. Students also have use of a full array of digital tools at Temple’s Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio in the Charles Library. Landscape Architecture studies are supported by hands-on learning experiences through the Tyler Greenhouse and Ambler Arboretum and Gardens.
