Pierre Koenig’s Schwartz House has been listed for sale in Rustic Canyon, Los Angeles. Built in 1994, the home is the last project Koenig completed, uniquely built on four structural steel beams.
Externally, the home takes the form of a steel cube held aloft by four 40-foot-tall structural steel columns. The cube is rotated 30 degrees on an axis to face the canyon and ocean and clad in bright steel with a blend of full-length and half-length windows. By contrast, the four columns and external staircase are finished in black paint.
Inside, the four-bedroom home features two main levels floating above a garage and sheltered courtyard. The upper and lower levels are connected by a yellow spiral staircase wrapping around one of the structural steel columns, offering a colorful departure from a pure material palette of hardwood and glass.
“Less an object in the landscape than a machine that dissolves the boundary between indoors and outdoors, the home is a study in restraint, and views through floor-to-ceiling glass provide the most elegant wallpaper in the world,” realtor Compass explains. “The perfect integration of form and function, the structure is literally the finish, the palette of materials minimal and serene: black steel framing, galvanized wall panels, aluminum fenestration, frosted glass.”
The home is currently listed with an asking price of $4.65 million.
The Schwartz House isn’t the first Koenig house to be listed for sale in recent times. In 2018, we reported on the sale of Koenig’s Case Study House #21B for $3.6 million. One year later, meanwhile, we shared the news that the home was undergoing an extensive renovation effort.
