HWKN has published images of their recently-completed Water Building One project in Washington D.C. The 13,400-square-foot building sits on the edge of the new District Wharf development on the city’s waterfront and is designed for hospitality and to host visiting boat crews.
The team describes the scheme as a “taught and graphic” design set against the backdrop of the wider development and is intended as a “new icon to welcome boats to Washington D.C. and visitors to District Wharf.”
The defining feature of the building’s exterior is a truss which the architects describe as a “conceptual extension of the long bench that runs along District Wharf’s waterfront.” Behind the truss is a simply detailed glass box with large interior spaces providing uninterrupted views of the Jefferson Memorial and the adjacent waterfront.
The project is one of several designed by HKWN to recently appear in our editorial. Earlier this month, we covered the completion of the firm’s Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, which features a playful stone facade. Late last year, meanwhile, we covered the firm’s upcoming commercial tower in London’s Canada Water Dockside as well as their recently completed 351 Marin tower in New Jersey.
