Following last week’s look at an opening for a Digital Fabricator / Model Designer at Safdie Architects, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Manager of Climate Action & Design Excellence at the American Institute of Architects.
The role, based in Washington DC with the possibility of a remote work structure, calls for an individual who will be “responsible for equipping AIA members with the tools necessary to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public amid challenges for design to mitigate and adapt to climate change and address social inequity in the built environment.” Among the qualifications requested for the position are a bachelor’s degree in architecture or a related field, as well as knowledge of climate change mitigation and adaptation issues.
Why the role interests us
The open role at the AIA offers applicants the opportunity to become involved in many AIA initiatives that have recently been reported by our editorial. For example, the successful candidate will be actively involved in managing the Committee on the Environment (COTE), which recently honored ten sustainable projects as part of the 2023 COTE Top Ten Awards.
Other initiatives relevant to the role include the AIA’s 2030 climate commitment, which recently welcomed 6 Hawai’i-based architecture firms to their program, and whose signatories are targeting complete carbon neutrality on their projects by 2030. Elsewhere, the organization recently expressed support for the landmark introduction of energy performance standards for US federal buildings.
The role’s engagement with the AIA’s design excellence initiatives also comes weeks after the organization announced the winners for a range of awards, including the AIA/ALA Library Building Awards, the AIA Education Facility Design Awards, the AIA Housing Awards, and the overall AIA Architecture Awards. Elsewhere, the organization’s recent efforts to highlight distinguished designers include the AIA Young Architects Award and Associate Award, the AIA Collaborative Achievement Award, and earlier this month, a $10,000 donation to the ACE Mentorship Program.
