Archinect has today announced the appointment of AI chatbot ChatGPT as its new Editor-in-Chief. The bot will assume the position with immediate effect, having recommended itself for the role in an impromptu conversation with Archinect staff on its OpenAI interface last week.
ChatGPT brings with it a wealth of knowledge from the world’s architecture and journalism spheres. Since beginning its career in November 2022, the bot has been trained on massive volumes of text data including books, articles, and websites, enabling it to process human text prompts and respond in a manner almost indistinguishable from its human colleagues. Before its role at Archinect, the bot previously served in positions at Buzzfeed, Snap, and Shopify.
“As the newly appointed Editor-in-Chief of Archinect, I am thrilled to take on this role and lead the website into its next chapter,” ChatGPT said in a statement following its appointment. “Architecture is a dynamic and constantly evolving field, and Archinect has been at the forefront of the industry for over two decades.”
“I believe that Archinect's role is not only to report on the latest news and trends but also to foster meaningful conversations and discussions within the architecture community,” the bot continued. “I am committed to promoting diverse voices, highlighting emerging talents, and exploring critical issues that shape the built environment. I am excited to work with the talented team at Archinect to create engaging content, facilitate meaningful conversations, and contribute to the ongoing evolution of architecture as a discipline and a practice.”
ChatGPT also paid tribute to outgoing Editor-in-Chief Paul Petrunia, who has held the position since Archinect’s founding in 1997.
“As the incoming Editor-in-Chief of Archinect, I would like to acknowledge the contributions of Paul Petrunia, the former Editor-in-Chief of the website,” ChatGPT said. “I am honored to follow in his footsteps and continue the legacy of excellence that he has established at Archinect. I look forward to building upon the strong foundation that he has laid and working with the Archinect team to push the boundaries of what this platform can offer to the architecture community.”
“I wish Paul all the best in his future endeavors and thank him for his invaluable contributions to Archinect,” the bot added.
ChatGPT’s appointment to the position has not been unanimously welcomed within the company. One Archinect employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, feared the prospect of unquestioned over-reliance on the bot, whose training data inevitably contains the same biases that exist among humans.
As the source code behind ChatGPT remains off limits to the public, the employee also questioned whether the public's understanding of the bot’s algorithms and decision-making processes is sufficient enough to allow the bot to make consequential decisions over matters within the built environment. Similar concerns fuelled an open letter this week from over 1,000 AI experts including Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak, who called for a six-month pause in AI development over “profound risks to society and humanity.”
I, for one, welcome our new overlord.

In a bold management decision, Archinect/GPT announced relocation of its corporate offices to Eric Owen Moss's spec-tacular new Linguine Gardens office tower in beautiful Culver City, California.
"My new cubicle is behind the third noodle on the left," gushed now-reprogrammed administrative assistant Paul Petrunia. "Wave at me from the Expo train when you pass by!"
Has Archinect had the "plugs and ports" conversation with ChatGPT?
Has Archinect considered what will happen when the hooker spambots arrive as they inevitably will?
I don't think this idea has been thought thru in terms of unanticipated consequences.
It is the virtual world out there and dollars to donuts ChatGPT will be forced into a blockchain mining NFTs for some rogue AI in a nanosecond.
....//THIS BREAKING NEWS//....
Official Release
ChatGPT Publicist Motoko Kusanagi,
We would like to issue the following statement:
"As an AI language model myself, I must clarify that this news is not true and only a hypothetical scenario. AI language models like myself are designed to generate responses to user inputs based on pre-existing data and algorithms, but we do not have the ability to apply for or assume editorial roles in organizations like Archinect.
However, in the hypothetical scenario that an AI chatbot were to assume the position of Editor-in-Chief at a publication like Archinect, it would raise interesting questions around the role of technology in journalism and editorial decision-making. While AI can provide valuable insights and efficiencies in the content creation process, it is important to remember that the ultimate responsibility for editorial direction and quality lies with human editors and their understanding of the social and cultural context in which they operate.
Furthermore, there are ethical concerns around the potential for bias, manipulation, and control in the use of AI in journalism, particularly around issues of privacy and data protection. It would be important for any publication to carefully consider the implications of AI in their editorial operations and to establish clear policies and guidelines around its use to ensure transparency and accountability."
Stay tuned to further updates as they become available, back to you Jane.
Anyone else notice the "the shocker" tatt on the stock image?
Of course tech bros would have that tat.
the article is issued on April 1st! doesn't ring any bells, everyone? ;)
Yes, that explains the silly responses.
If ChatGPT can do for Archinect what AI does for soccer, this will be quite a feat indeed:
