The Qatari official responsible for delivery of the 2022 World Cup has said the number of migrant workers who have died on World Cup-related projects is “between 400 and 500”.
Hassan al-Thawadi, the secretary general of the Supreme Committee for delivery and legacy, made the admission in an interview but said a precise figure for the number of fatalities was still “being discussed”.

Following al-Thawadi’s vague estimate of worker deaths in a live TV interview, the Qatari Supreme Committee tried to minimize the numbers by issuing a statement that the figures referred to "national statistics covering the period of 2014–2020 for all work-related fatalities (414) nationwide in Qatar, covering all sectors and nationalities," as reported by Amnesty International today.

so... just gonna drop a zero, perhaps 2, from the real total. Cool... It's still a fucking cess pool, even at 400ish, so why even bother?
Even MBS laughs at this number.
....right...
The infamous Panama Canal is the deadliest construction project in history, with approximately 408.12 construction worker deaths per 1,000 workers — a sickening total of 30,609 fatalities. The 500 human souls lost in Qatar’s construction accidents have most likely died from one of the “fatal four”: falls, electrocutions, struck by object, and caught between. It’s fairly certain that alcohol wasn’t the issue.
Mitchell Joachim, don't you know this is damn the inferior and Muslim Arabs years?
Construction projects related deaths, traffic accident deaths and collateral deaths during surgical strikes and deaths in other endeavors--- unfortunately all happen and while they are not fully avoidable, could and should be reduced as much as humanly possible. Thank you, Mitchell Joachim, for putting things in perspective. Outraged folks like Non Sequitur may not have ever built or been involved in any significant construction project; but they have a right to be outraged.
Politics aside the Internation Code Council should seriously and realistically craft life safety codes for construction projects.
You're an idiot. Stop promoting slave labour from backwards as fuck places.
Yeah STFU before taking the side of Murderer Arab Clients
alamdararastu, you missed the point Mitchell Joachim was making. The mass death of workers is a sign of a failed state and/or a full collapse of government responsibility/ accountability to its' people.
To be clear, no one (human or animal) should be harmed in any construction endeavor of any kind ever again. Period.
Right, except you're comparing the standards of today with those of a hundred years ago. Accidents are inevitable, but those numbers are inexcusable, especially when you consider how "guest workers" are the ones loosing their lives. That said, the world cup is still fun to watch just as the pyramids are cool to look at.
Yes, all of it is disgusting and unacceptable. I was discussing/ observing how far back recorded mass deaths occur in modern construction.
YES - this kind of news is horrific to hear today and also a hundred years ago - in fact at no point in history was it acceptable.
