HS2 Ltd., the British non-departmental public body behind the development of High Speed 2 (HS2) national high-speed railway, has released an updated design for its new terminus station at London Euston.
Two new images, updated from 2015, show the concept design for the interior and exterior of the station. They were drafted by a design consortium made up of Arup, WSP, Grimshaw Architects, Haptic, and LDA Design, alongside HS2’s Station Construction Partner, Mace Dragados JV (MDJV).
The ground-level concourse will be 300 meters long and will allow free movement for both passengers and visitors throughout the station. Retail and station facilities will feature here and on the first floor. It will also open to new public spaces on the north and south. The station hall will become the largest station concourse in the UK.
The design reduces the ticketed area of the station by placing platforms and trains below ground allowing the hall to function as a public, sheltered north-south route linking Euston Road and Bloomsbury to Hampstead Road and Camden Town. This route will link with new public east-west routes that will be provided through the HS2 station roof once future regeneration of the Network Rail station is complete. The design also aims to integrate the existing Euston station with the HS2 terminus.
The station is set to provide a major new public green space in the north, along with community gardens in the west. The station will encourage walking and cycling as part of a sustainable transport strategy, providing new cycle routes and 2,000 cycle parking spaces.
The HS2 station is designed to achieve a BREEAM outstanding rating, which is an industry-recognized standard for buildings that reduce energy usage and materials waste and minimize impact on the natural environment. HS2 will now be holding a number of engagement sessions to showcase the new design to members of the local community and passengers in May and June.
