Drawing from his own experiences of migration, esteemed artist Do Ho Suh is known for his monumental fabric installations that recreate his previous residences around the world, as his way of exploring the concept of home, personal identity, memory, and the architecture of domestic space. Recently, LACMA was recently gifted Suh's “348 West 22nd Street, Apartment A, Unit-2, Staircase” (2011-15). The museum will begin exhibiting the installation at the Resnick Pavilion starting November 10.
The full-size installation replicates Suh's ground-floor residence in a New York City building, offering visitors a glimpse into his personal life that feels both estranged and familiar. Fusing traditional Korean sewing techniques with digital modeling tools, the installation is made of luminous, translucent polyester.
The interior is a maze-like passageway of conjoined rooms and hallways that are supported by stainless steel. The monochromatic corridor, stairs, apartment, and studio are accented with detailed replicas of home fixtures and appliances.
“348 West 22nd Street” is Suh's second work to join LACMA's collection, following his silk sculpture “Gate” (2005), which is based on one of the gates at his childhood home in Seoul.
