The New Delhi based practice, Studio Lotus, creates a winning project design that applies adaptive re-use techniques to transform the historic Mehrangarh Fort precinct in Jodhpur, India. The new Visitor Centre and Knowledge Centre is set to create an alternative entrance to the Mehrangarh Fort. By using a metal and dry stone construction, the new design helps soften the site's high footfall with a low ecological impact. According to the studio, "it was pertinent that any additions or modifications to this dense fabric intertwined with the existing structure through expressive and adaptable additions that make the most of modern construction technology, yet stand deferential to the historic site’s timeless magnificence."
The center consists of a series of interconnected decks that descends from the entrance of the Palace. The stone and metal building materials allows for the building's structure to be reshaped over time. As the building's needs evolve so will the building's structure. The studio aimed to focus on three elemental factors during the design process localization, re-configuration, and modularity.
"These inserts within the Fort presents an opportunity to create a framework for architecture, which could become the basis of continued development over the next few years of the envisaged Masterplan. The site is located along the north-western ramparts overlooking the Chokhelao Bagh which sits at the foot of the Mehrangarh Fort. The new Knowledge Centre will consist of Exhibition Galleries, Seminar Halls, Community Spaces and Scholar’s Studies. The spaces, placed sequentially from public to progressively more private, along the decks, have been designed around a steep light well. Stone latticed screen and a system of trellises formed through extensions of the building’s primary steel structure will characterize the façade."
By using the pre-existing built environment, Studio Lotus incorporated those elements with the region's culture and heritage. The studio's multi disciplinary approach to design has made them one of India's notable and progressive architectural design firms.
