The NCARB Board of Directors recently announced a Policy for Diversity in which the organization states a commitment to greater diversity, with respect to gender, race, geography, age, perspective (architect vs. non-architect), and physical ability, when electing leadership positions. The NCARB has worked to diversify their volunteer pool, transformed key programs for inclusion, and promoted wider access to licensure. Yet, President and Chair of the Board states more can be done:
"While diversity at the licensing board level is largely controlled by governors or other appointing authorities, more can be done to influence the appointment process [...] And internally, we will strive to more fully utilize existing licensing board members who bring the perspective of under-represented groups."
Policy for Diversity
This Policy on Diversity is designed to encourage consideration of underrepresented groups when the NCARB Board of Directors or the Council membership selects individuals to participate on Boards, Committees or other organizational components. The Board of Directors recognizes that historically, the field of architecture has not reflected our national diversity in the population of its schools, professional practice, and consequently in representation in professional organizations. Additionally, while the number of women and minorities in architecture has increased, their involvement in the leadership of professional organizations has lagged behind this increase. The Board of Directors strongly encourages efforts to recruit and reflect a greater diversity in participants at the national, regional, jurisdictional and committee levels. The creation of an architectural licensure community that honors, respects and welcomes diverse backgrounds in its leadership will expand and enrich the dialogue on how to develop the regulations and policies that protect the Health, Safety, and Welfare of the Public in architectural practice
Ok, that's 2 of the three. The AIA has they will work to diversify the practice. NCARB has said something similar, and yes fees!
Now NAAB needs to re-up (?) their commitment. This goes beyond state what the numbers are and actually taking steps to increase diversity. All this is moot if initial interest is still weak.
If only they'd all listen to the celebrity guest for last year's AIA convention, "get them while they are young."

yeah, like the diversity in the picture.....
86% male
100% caucasian
100% baby-boomer generation

What we really need is the orderly downsizing of NCARB and a massive reduction in their fees.
What do these people do again? 11% fee increase is a promotion raise...
I bet they are doing this to suddenly make themselves relevant, finally.
ok
Maybe they could start by diversifying their attire. Baby steps, you know.
There are some bright blue socks... I bet those got them to the front for the photo!

But we're not even going to discuss rationalizing the insane nitpicking regulations to enable the architects of, say, North Carolina blanket reciprocity with the architects of South Carolina because that would cut into our vigorish and, man, do we have a sweet gig going. So, instead, we will put of this statement of hackneyed buzzwords to pretend we give a shit about the architects whose work scope we control. Keep those checks coming.
Oh affirmative action... how sad...
