Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese Architect Tadao Ando's first residential development in NYC and outside Asia, 152 Elizabeth Street, has just sold its highly anticipated duplex penthouse for $35 million. The 9,000-square-feet penthouse spans three floors and features a 4 bedroom, 4.5 bath home with an astonishing amount of private outdoor space. The home also features a number of custom details including a spiral staircase of stainless steel, stone and glass that will connect the three levels; a fireplace framed by Pietra Cardosa stone and artisan plaster; and a seamless kitchen that features a sliding countertop island by the Italian brand Minimal.
The penthouse is a part of Tadao Ando's seven-story brutalist condo tower located in the Nolita—"North of Little Italy"—neighborhood of NYC. It is Mr. Ando’s first stand-alone project in the city. According to earlier press materials, "the building makes a strong yet quiet statement with a façade comprised of voluminous glass, burnished metal and flanked by poured in-place concrete and a living green wall that rises the height of the building. Located at Kenmare and Elizabeth Street, the combination of materials, an unparalleled level of craft and quality, are signature elements of Ando’s work."
The striking condominium features just seven custom homes, each of which is focused on creating a sense of openness throughout the home as well as a fluidity between the indoors and the outdoors. 152 Elizabeth is developed by Sumaida + Khurana, which recently secured financing for its next development, a 400-foot-tall residential tower at 11th Avenue and West 56th Street, to be designed by Álvaro Siza, another Pritzker laureate for whom this building will be his first in the U.S.
