If Carson wants to dramatically change the nature of HUD, all he needs to do is nothing — a course of action he seems temperamentally inclined to accept. Under Carson, HUD could stop enforcement of that "socialist" Fair Housing Act. It could stop prodding local governments to increase access to homes. It could look the other way when local ordinances sequester government-mandated affordable housing away from those with enough pull to say "not in my backyard." — mtv.com

MTV?!?
I know, crazy, right? Not like any other music publication, errrrrrr, Rolling Stone, does anything hard hitting.
Anna Maria Cox, does work for the Times I believe, and has done other work on political issues.
If MTV wants to try and be relevant again, then this makes sense.
I mean really, I know you'd rather get all your news from the WNNM, but Brietbart is busy doing the human centipede with Hair Furor and Heil Hitler nut, Eric Spencer.
Well, we just recorded a podcast on this, so there's a lot more said about it that you'll hear tomorrow, but I'll add something I didn't say clearly enough on the recording: housing for people is a HUGE issue that is only getting worse. A meme has been floating around my social media the last few days reiterating that you should be paying less than 30% of your take-home pay for housing and the uniform response is HAHAHAHAHahahahah....sigh....HAHAHAHAHAHhhhhhahahahahaha....
Agreed Donna. Housing and property will need attention these next coming years.
edit:
Imagine if "rock the vote" came back via responsible advocacy and reporting from the olde school form of social media like mtv.
Marc, good having you on, great insights. I really do think that the future Administration's goal is to destroy the federal government as we know it, further evidence came to light this evening; Sarah "Drill Baby, Drill" Palin, as head of the VA. Yep. Head of the VA. If government was broke before, and Obama proved that, despite congressional insurrection, it can work to make the lives of most Americans better, the incoming Drumpf Administration, will show you how bad it'll really get, when it's filled with the most bankrupt and inept tools on the planet.
Every problem is a nail, and the Drumpf Administration is filled with screwdrivers.
Thanks again to you, Amelia and Donna.
I'm more concerned with this as a form of social and political historicism - as in remember the good ole days when voting rights were based on class, gender, and race. This is just the first set system restores to get back to pre-civil war.
In this age of the internet it's more important to be able to google the solution quickly than it is to be an expert and understand the impact of the decision on the collective. If google can design an algorithm to design cities how hard can this really be? Data is truth and truth is data. We don't need all these messy things about ethics and civics because they're slow and messy and often make us aware of how things don't add up.
But another, far more troubling line of thought that is that these selections are all designed to "just" ruffle political feathers- at the expense of the nation. If this is the case it strikes me as highly irresponsible and mean spirited. The imagined punchline is the reactions of press and liberal politicians, but the fallout is so incredibly caustic.
My whole deal with these picks, is that - to borrow a phrase from Hamilton - I want people who were in the room where it happened, and none of these people have demonstrated they were in the particular rooms where the things happened. Oh, they have experience, but not in the thing they are being asked to run. It is cynical, irresponsible, dangerous, and definitely conceived to make things worse, by either ineptitude or downright corruption. If you want to payback people for their support of you during the campaign, you put them in ambassador posts, that's what those jobs are designed for, not heads of large bureaucratic institutions, affecting millions of lives. If however, you want to destroy institutions, and effective government, you do this, oh, what is it called again, wait I remember, I've heard it said by a famous architect and other right-wing ideologues ah yes; cronyism.
It’s not Brain Surgery! Dr. Ben Carson Offered HUD Secretary; Push-Back and Cheers
Our industry has been torturted by a wide range of regs, many coming from HUD. So to us, Dr. Carson would be a breath of fresh air. We hope the transition team and Dr. Carson shake hands, and announce it soon.
tonykovach, can you give an *explicit* example of torturous regs? I'm asking seriously. What regulations does HUD require that make it impossible for you to be innovative in your work?
Also please explain how, even if the regulations have been torture, someone ignorant of the issues (and hypocritically so, considering he's talked about how he wouldn't take a different post due to self admitted ignorance) is going to be a breath of fresh air.
under 30%... of household income on housing?
me: 26% post tax....includes mortgage and property taxes. Do I get a cookie?
I keep hearing talk of Trump having picked Carson for HUD and Palin for VA or Interior. However, according to the latest reporting by NYT, while both of those names have been floated neither has been officially announced for any Cabinet position...

If any good could come from a Carson HUD, it may be that he could become buddies with former CDC Director Jackson and begin to learn from him about how the urban environment impacts public health. You know, a doctor to doctor sort of thing.
Non Sequitur, assuming your house has increased in value since you purchased it, you can get a cookie as long as it was baked in the same month in which you closed on your home.
