Linda Jacobs Book Talk: “Strangers in the West: The Syrian Colony of New York City, 1880-1900” | September 6, recommended by Justine Testado
Photo via KalimahPress.
Scholar and author Linda Jacobs' new book vividly tells the story of “Greater Syria”-region immigrants who settled in NYC starting in 1880. Jacobs, whose own grandparents were part of the New York Syrian Colony, sheds light on the everyday lives of this early immigrant community and the people who founded it. Taking place at the Skyscraper Museum, this talk is free and open to all.
AIANY Global Dialogues - STONE | Behind The Rock | September 7, recommended by Alexander Walter
Let's talk rock. No other building material has provided shelter to humans—and their ancient progenitors—for as long as natural rock has. Embodying notions of monumentality and eternity, stone has certainly arrived in contemporary architecture with a new generation of designers developing high-tech applications. This panel discussion at the Center for Architecture will elaborate on the topic with speakers such as Eric Höweler, Anton Garcia-Abril, Christian Pongratz, and others.
Nendo: 50 Manga Chairs | Opening on September 8, recommended by Amelia Taylor-Hochberg
This playful, expressive exhibition brings the world of high design and Japanese manga comics together—a combination that at first makes no sense, and then makes perfect sense. When placed in succession, the 50 chairs' unique personalities form new narratives of sequential art, riffing on the media of their inspiration.
