Julia Ingalls took readers on a tour of some of the world's most attractive public housing projects, from the last decade. ChrisDx commented "The projects certainly appear innovative in images taken most likely when they were first built. I wonder how ‘successful’ they have been in meeting the resident's needs and what they look like now."
Plus, Nicholas Korody investigated how ED/GY, or Ethical Dwellings for Generation Y, hopes to address "new forms of living and owning in a changing London". Olaf Design Ninja_ was terrified "holy shit is this dystopic!" The Birds of Venice noted the "Marxist sideboob. #housing".

Senior editor Orhan Ayyüce reminded readers that Dan Graham hates conceptual art. Thayer-D "was enjoying him quite well until he drew an arbitrary line between art and graphic design. Graphic design is visceral and art is sensual according to him. What's the difference?...Like those who go on about one structure being a building while the other is Architecture.”
Reacting to the 2016 recipients of the Graham Foundation’s grants LiMX worries "Is it weird the entire research arm of architecture is funded by one organization".
MAD revealed renderings of their “highly sustainable” Xinhee Design Center. Mr_Wiggin wasn’t so sure "My understanding is that sustainability is not so much the sum of its parts, but it's place and function within a system. This looks to me just another feature building, for an industry with dubious sustainability credentials…"
Both Archinect Sessions #76 and peopleplacesspaces weighed-in on the latest renderings for Zumthor's LACMA. Andrew.Circle was surprised "It is very sad that an architect like Zumthor, who hasn't really produced a dog of a project in his life (unless I'm missing one), is being second-guessed like this over the realism of the renderings...I don't see a reason for the hand-wringing after some marketing renderings, or even concern" Yet, sameolddoctor agreed with mantaray "Exactly...The design itself sucks. To say that just the renderings do is just a matter of decency. I hope this design never gets built."
For his part, Gregory Walker (an open zumthor fan boy), tried to put his thumb on the problem, its "trying to take the scale and subtlety of kolumba and blow it up to a scale that it's just not holding together at. it's too big...elements like exterior stairs, sculptures, etc. are encroaching on the design in a way that's going to continue to erode the purity of the gesture. this would have worked at 1/5th the current size."
While the July, Architecture Billings Index remained in positive terrain, according to AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD.
"This election cycle seems to be generating more uncertainty than usual. Growth in our economy has been disappointing, and business investment has declined by 2 percent or more (annualized) per quarter over the past three quarters...When asked if they have seen any direct impact of the presidential election on any projects at their firm, 5 percent indicated that they had."

Discussions/Threads
s=r*(theta) is looking for AWESOME ideas on what I can do while the office is slow. senjohnblutarsky suggested either looking "for RFP's" or updating "your résumé." chigurh added "A slow office in this economy is a huuuge red flag. Move on, secure a position with more traction before the next crash".
Everyday Intern wanted to discuss a provocative opinion piece from the NYT that has been getting passed around. The op-ed argues for adaptability over sustainability. JonathanLivingston liked the article as it offers a "more realistic perspective to take regarding climate change." Though as 3tk pointed out "The push for adaptability and resiliency is well over a couple of decades old both in environmental philosophy (which I believe is the author's field) and design."
Finally, on a lighter note proto started a thread for showing off "studio dogs - professional dogs, graduate dogs, undergraduate dogs or master trades dogs". Dangermouse raised proto by "a studio falcon".
