Museum Mile Festival | Opens June 14, recommended by Justine Testado
Ever wanted to visit some of NYC's most famous museums in one night? Join the fun in the 2016 Museum Mile Festival! Attendees get to walk the Mile on NYC's Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th Street, while also visit seven of the city's notable cultural institutions —including The Met, Cooper Hewitt, the Museum of the City of New York, and of course the Guggenheim — which will be open for free throughout the evening opening celebration on June 14. First launched in 1978, this year's festival is sure to be another huge success.
The Rupture | June 16, recommended by Nicholas Korody
The Van Alen Institute and General Assembly are presenting a "Variety Hour" oriented around "disruption," that buzz word you just can't seem to escape. A lexical dissection of the many uses of the term will take form through "performances and provocations". The lineup is interesting and varied, including Mimi Zeiger, Riley Hooker (Façadomy), Oscar Nuñez (Center for Urban Pedagogy), Jonathan Lee (Google design), Steven Thrasher (the Guardian), Kimberley Drew (@museummammy), E. Tammy Kim (the New Yorker), It’s Showtime NYC subway dancers, and members of Picture the Homeless. Should be both engaging and provocative.
Film screening: “Charles & Ray Eames: The Architect and the Painter“ + “Harry Bertoia’s Sculpture” | June 17, recommended by Amelia Taylor-Hochberg
This 2011 documentary on the Eames' diverse and "eccentric" work, narrated by James Franco, makes the case for the couple's "immeasurable contributions" to American culture. Screened alongside the historic 1965 film, "Harry Bertoia's Sculpture", the double-feature shouldn't be missed by those interested in midcentury design history and its role today.
Craft and Architecture: Tod Williams and Billie Tsien | June 20, recommended by Paul Petrunia
In this final installment of the Center for Architecture's series "Craft and Architecture", Tod Williams and Billie Tsien present their work.
Also keep track of our weekly event picks for Los Angeles and London.
