After beginning the year with a decline, the Architecture Billings Index has posted three consecutive months of increasing demand for design activity at architecture firms. [...] (AIA) reported the April ABI score was 50.6, down from the mark of 51.9 in the previous month. This score still reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 56.9, down from a reading of 58.1 the previous month. — aia.org

This still shows anemic demand. In every region it seems there a a few localized hot spots in a sea of destruction.
Thank god for stagnation....I couldn't imagine where we would do be without settling for stalemates?
So, the more firms that come into existence, an equal amount of established firms can, more or less, can go out of business completely, without bothering the index in the slightest.... kind of makes you think. Or not.
Is there not a movement towards overhauling or replacing this indicator entirely?
"The ABI serves as a leading economic indicator that leads nonresidential construction activity by approximately 11 months"
-basically an average for 11 months
"The indexes are developed from the monthly Work-on-the-Boards survey"
Are we to continually assume 100 percent participation in this survey?
"If an equal share of firms report an increase as report a decrease, the score for that month will be 50"
anemic is a good adjective. Maybe after the tech/startup/ venture capital bubble bursts we can move on to more pressing matters. Or not.
If you're in school or in the professional world and haven't already visited the AIA page on the ABI- do it now. information is good. http://www.aia.org/practicing/economics/AIAS076265
we shouldn't equate 'anemic' with 'growth.' growth implies more than there was before, which is a good trend. institutional appears to be the only sector that isn't growing right?
