Starting on Monday, individuals who own recreational drones will have to register their devices with the Federal Aviation Administration. The mandatory registration program applies to drones that weigh between 0.55 and 55 pounds. — CNBC
According to the report, drones that were purchased before yesterday have to be registered by February 19th, 2016. If you buy a drone in the future, then you'll have to register it before flying it for the first time.
If you don't, prepare to pay a steep fine: up to $27,500. That being said, registration is only $5 and you can do it online. If you register within 30 days of the law going into effect (on Jan. 20), then the fee will be waived. It's pretty much a no-brainer.

Fuck this government and their damn over regulation.... I wonder if it ever crossed a politicians mind to get rid of some laws instead of just constantly creating new ones...
all this is, is the government fearing the public who now on many levels have equally high tech toys. in other words, our least intelligent and dilligent citizens do not have the technological upper hand anymore and therefore fear their inherant stupidity will be found out - so you make more laws................i am leary though of privatization of government as well. i guess the big question is - how do you get hard working smart people to work for the government? free the drones!
jla-x, and they will catch you first: Tokyo police are using drones with nets to catch other drones
LOL!
Good one Alexander.
I have completed the registration for the hobbyist process. I will wait until March or so for when they finalize the commercial application. I have to look at what the new regulations under "Section 48" for commercial use and what is entailed to decide.
