Archinect's Must-Do Picks for Archtober 2015 - Week 2 (Oct. 9-16)
Looking for exciting things to do in New York City this month? Lucky you, Archtober is back for another year with a rich program of engaging exhibitions, lectures, conferences, films, tours, parties, and other activities to celebrate the value of architecture and design in everyday life.
For the fifth year, Archinect & Bustler are proud to once again be Archtober's digital media sponsors.
From the extensive roster of Archtober events, here are some highlights to take note of from Oct. 9-16:
- Paul Rand Closing Party with Kyle Cooper | Oct. 9
Join us for the grand finale of the exhibition Everything Is Design: The Work of Paul Rand. Star designer Kyle Cooper will reflect on how Rand impacted him as Cooper's teacher at Yale University. Donald Albrecht, MCNY’s Curator of Architecture and Design, will join Cooper afterwards for a brief conversation. We will keep the Rand gallery open for late viewing and signature “Rand” cocktails!
- National Design Week | Oct. 10-18
National Design Week celebrates the important role that design plays in all aspects of daily life. Launched in 2006, National Design Week is held each year in conjunction with the National Design Awards, Cooper Hewitt’s largest and most visible education initiative. During National Design Week, Cooper Hewitt’s award-winning Education Department hosts a series of free public programs based on the work of the National Design Awards.
- Urban Ecology Bicycle Tour: Brooklyn Navy Yard | Oct. 11
Discover the natural world in the midst of a thriving industrial park! Starting at BLDG 92, this tour led in partnership with Turnstile Tours features the Brooklyn Grange’s rooftop farm, an oyster restoration project & more. Learn about rooftop systems, urban farming, and intersections between stormwater management, landscape architecture, and marine ecology.
- Jeanne Gang | Oct. 12
In her first lecture at Columbia since 2012, architect, MacArthur Fellow, and GSAPP Visiting Professor Jeanne Gang presents the work of Studio Gang Architects. The Chicago-based firm’s acclaimed portfolio includes the Aqua Tower and Columbia College Media Production Center. In Gang’s work, Richard Meier notes a “continuation of Chicago’s modernist tradition of structural rationalism.
- Architecture & Design Film Festival 2015 | Oct. 13-18
The 7th edition of Architecture & Design Film Festival, celebrates the unique creative spirit that drives design. With a curated selection of over 25 films, 5 panels, book signings and a “Virtual Reality / Augmented Reality” lounge to experience new technology. ADFF creates an opportunity to entertain, engage and educate all types of people who are excited about architecture and design.
- STHLMNYC | Oct. 13
STHLMNYC brings together leading urban planners, architects and policy makers from Stockholm and NYC to discuss the future of our cities and urban architecture. In an informal setting, distinguished practitioners and theorists explore the theme of “Adaptation and Affordability,” touching upon the critical need for collaboration as well as the power of cities to spearhead the formulation and development of an adaptive urban environment.
- Drawing Ambience: Alvin Boyarsky and the Architectural Association | Oct. 13
An exhibition featuring formative works by architects who are among the most celebrated figures today—including John Hejduk, first Dean of the School of Architecture, Cooper Union professor Michael Webb, Cooper alumni Daniel Libeskind, as well as Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas and Bernard Tschumi.
- Rosenblatt Lecture: Moshe Safdie, FAIA | Oct. 14
Made to Measure - Over the past four decades, Moshe Safdie has completed more than 12 major museum projects and been deeply involved in dozens of others. These projects are each designed as a unique response to the essence of their program and place. Safdie will present from his firm’s extensive body of museum and cultural work, and discuss the design of museums that belong.
- Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon: Women in Architecture | Oct. 15
In conjunction with Archtober and New York Archives Week, the Guggenheim will host its third Wikipedia edit-a-thon—or, #guggathon—to enhance articles related to women in architecture on Wikipedia, the world’s largest source of free knowledge.
- AFHny’s Night of Impact | Oct. 16
Celebrate service and the growing field of public interest design at AFHny’s Night of Impact event, a precursor to Day of Impact (DOI), a city-wide service day tailored to New York City’s architects and design professionals. Drinks and light fare will be served. DOI volunteers and partner organizations receive discount admission, but all are welcome to attend and raise a glass to impact.
- Bricks and Beverages: Professionals Play with LEGO Bricks | Oct. 16
"Bricks and Beverages" will consist of a LEGO build competition with three architectural challenges. Participants in teams (1-5 people per team) will randomly draw a building type (museum, stadium, theater) and styles (Chicago School, Brutalist, Gothic) from a hate to create a wacky design mandate. A LEGO prize will be awarded to the best team, selected by a panel of judges.
