It might be the City’s most contested site. A new call to list No 1 Poultry, designed by architect Sir James Stirling and one of the last monuments of postmodernism, has revived a debate about the position and the protection of recent heritage.
A proposal by Perella Weinberg [...] to make changes to an imperfect building has provoked the Twentieth Century Society to call for its listing at Grade II*, the second highest status available (and the highest possible for such a recent structure).

All due respect for Stirling's important talent: this building is in the "so ugly it's fantastic!" category. It also looks to be really well-built. I hope it can be saved from butchering according to our current rtends.
so ugly it's fantastic
21st century aesthetic standards, alas.
Nah, Miles, I think a lot of 21st Century projects are going to be "so ugly because I'm too depressed about the world to try any harder than this" category. It's definitely true in the art world!
Not that I don't love ugly buildings, but this doesn't seem ugly at all. Maybe a bit silly.
Well-built or not, Stirling did fascinating work. The best ones were ugly though.
Right, midlander. It's really not ugly, but it's ridiculousness taken to an extreme yet workable level. It's Urinetown: An Appalling Notion, Fully Realized. (My classmate Scott Pask did the Tony-award winning set design for the Broadway production, so it's very close to my heart.)
i hope they change the name of the Stirling Prize, too.
i propose The Yes, Well . . . Ahem, I'm Sorry, What Were You Saying?, Uhhhh, What I Really Meant Was, Errrrrrrr.... Prize.
This is much better than the Richard Rogers dogshit
