When George Lucas tried to expand his production company studios in California’s wealthy Marin County, the community pushed back. Then the “Star Wars” creator wanted to sell the land to a developer who would build affordable housing.
“It’s inciting class warfare,” Carolyn Lenert, then head of the North San Rafael Coalition of Residents, told The New York Times at the time.
Now, two years after that project stalled, Lucas has decided to build the affordable housing and pay for it all himself.

Lucas has also been in the news lately for the design of his Museum of Narrative Arts in Chicago.

thumbs up!
this is the most awesome thing i have read in a long time. i hope he someone how ends up having to follow through on it.
i also hope there are lightsabers. low income housing with lightsabers would be awesome.
Media oligarch building public housing. Hope and change!
Low income housing with a community center w/amenities. Got my vote. I think he will have the tenacity to make it happen.
Interesting definition of 'affordable': less than 80% of the local median income of $90k ($72k).
Miles, wouldn't that mean most people would qualify?
It's a metric tied to local conditions... there, in Marin County, which is comparatively wealthy. Elsewhere, it would be less than 80% of a local median income of $40k, for example.
So it's locally responsive, but does beg the question: why not build where the need is much greater?
As I recall, one of the commenters on the article said that a lot of the people who work there can not afford to live there and live in the surrounding area, so the data is somewhat skewed.
I think it is vindictive, and I love it.
A brilliant troll!
wasn't Luke Skywalker upper class by blood but middle class growing-up and became Jeti lower class to fight evil?
i get that right?
hmm. luke's father and grandmother were introduced as slaves, but his mother was a princess and senator. i suppose that counts as upper class.
however the only parents he ever knew were moisture farmers on tatooine. that wasn't a very sophisticated lifestyle. i'm not sure they would count as 'middle class.' their farm was pretty far removed from mos eisley.
i don't think the jedi were ever lower class. it's sort of like the samurai were a higher class than merchants and farmers. i don't think they took vows of poverty like the benedictine monks either.
Yoda took a vow of poverty.
maybe lower class is the wrong phrase, just because you take a vow of poverty not sure that makes you lower class right?
Yoda went into hiding after order 66, as did obi-wan
