“When they came out of the quarters they could see it was fully engulfed,” fire department spokeswoman Katherine Main told the paper. “It was a building under construction in the framing phase. Almost 1 million square feet and a city block.” — RT
Freeway signs melt and windows in adjacent buildings burst in the intense heat. Two buildings near the burning construction site are damaged and freeways are closed for hours.
The fire which burned down an unpopular (among the architects) apartment complex a 7 storey wood construction in its final stages of completion.
Social media users in the city have been quick to post pictures of the pillar of fire reaching up into the night sky, with some taking a more ominous interpretation of the blaze.

Thanks, same. Although that video is cheesy, I like it because it reminds me of some Archigram and OMA collages.
Indeed it is very Archigram-esque. One can never have enough of those.

Thanks for posting, Orhan.
In Chicago that is called a fire of Convenience
I bet all the uninsured construction equipment has been relocated the night before and no one was hurt. I hope.

Anyone familiar with the LA building code, specifically how they can build a 7-story wood frame residential building? We're talking 1,300,000 square feet here ...
thought 5 was the max?
I think the legal/practical maximum for non-engineered wood framing is six stories. If this was reported as 7, it's either a 6 over 1 configuration or engineered lumber throughout. More likely the former, since the latter probably wouldn't make sense economically under 8 stories.
It was a five-over-one:
Also, mezzanine areas allowed at top-floor units add to height but not actual floor count. (I don't know if this project was so designed, but it's a code item.)
"7 storey wood what?"
wood construction, probably designed and built in accordance with the local building code.
