Erecting such a building “without authority of the General Assembly will diminish or impair the beneficial interest of plaintiffs and other Illinois citizens” [...]
such a designation conflicts with the trust, which calls for preserving property as “a natural resource and as a free and open space not occupied by a giant building.” [...]
by acting without the approval of state lawmakers, the city and park district would have excessive power over the property “for which they have no authority.”

"not occupied by a giant building..."
It's a done deal. The most money wins, and even if it gets that far Lucas and Co. can buy the state legislature in a heartbeat.
There is no park at this site. Just Parking.
The location is that parking lot between the stadium and the convention center. It's completely isolated from any part of the community, being located behind a highway and a rail yard, next to several blocks of convention centers. I don't see any value in maintaining status quo here. I'm not sure I'd even see value in putting an open park here, which no one is proposing.

It is such an ugly blob tent, that according to the Chinese Architect, is in homage to Chicago's architectural heritage. (In Chicago we must not have architects who are up for the job)
Maybe San Francisco saw the renderings and said no way to an eyesore. that white flowing tent like roof will need constant cleaning after one winter will be gray with pigeon droppings.
It is possible to build it over the rail yards like most of grant park was built over rail yards now converted to parking and not have it right on the lake. The site is all to do with peoples opinions of themselves and their work, if the Harris Theater was used as a precedent where most of the structure appears to be hidden under the park there would be fewer objections but the fact that is soars up and higher than any other building in any park in the city is a little audacious and will serve figuratively and literally as a lightning rod.

A museum for perpetual screenings of the six Star Wars movies and a perfect (centralized) place for the National Star Wars Convention. I'll bet it's going to have a huge gift shop conveniently positioned as the exit.
The least they could do is give it some style, like Jabba the Hutt's Palace
or maybe a Death Star
Easy to see where the real money is.
